Some things are better left forgotten . . .

When a woman wakes up with amnesia beside a mountain highway, confused and alone, she fights to regain her identity, only to learn that her parents have disappeared—not long after her mother bought a winning $47 million lottery ticket.

As her memories painfully resurface and the police uncover details of her parents' mysterious disappearance, Cleo Li finds herself under increasing suspicion. Even with the unwavering support of her brother, she can't quite reconcile her fears with reality or keep the harrowing nightmares at bay. As Cleo delves deeper for the truth, she cannot escape the nagging sense that maybe the person she should be afraid of...is herself.

With jolting revelations and taut ambiguity, In the Dark We Forget vividly examines the complexities of family—and the lies we tell ourselves in order to survive.

It's not the usual place to sleep: by the side of a British Columbia highway, unprotected even by a tent or a sleeping bag. When she wakes up, our narrator's first question is, Where am I? Then, even more importantly, Who am I? She makes her way to a local police station, where she learns she was apparently drugged and left out in the elements. Eventually, she learns her name, and something else, too: her parents have disappeared, shortly after winning millions in a lottery. As she learns more about herself, she begins to wonder: Could I somehow be responsible for my parents' disappearance? There are some minor problems with the narrative (for example, the opening sequence, before the woman gets her name back, could be briefer), but they are far outweighed by the book's strengths: crisply drawn characters, immersive dialogue, and a story that is genuinely intriguing and suspenseful. A solid thriller.
